11:00am - 11:30am Break
11:30am - 12:30pm Mapping & Visualization 101 - In this session, you’ll hear an overview of Google mapping tools for mapping and visualization needs. We will cover the basics of Google My Maps, My Maps Pro, Google Earth and Google Earth Pro.
12:30pm - 1:30pm Lunch Break
1:00pm - 2:30pm Mapping & Visualization 201 - Looking to tell a visual story with your data? In this workshop, we’ll introduce you to Google Fusion Tables, a tool to help you host, visualize and publish your spreadsheet data as interactive maps for the web. The session will start with a brief overview of Fusion Tables and examples of how the tool’s being used for mapping. Then we’ll dive into demos to get you familiar with how easily your data can be turned into a visualization with impact.
2:30pm - 3:00pm Break
3:00pm - 4:45pm Breakout sessions -- you can choose one of the following sessions. - Global Forest Watch: learn how you can participate as part of Global Forest Watch deforestation alerts
- Google Earth: Learn about the advanced features of Google Earth (and Earth Pro), such as importing GIS datasets, visualizing GPS data, calculating viewsheds, creating and generating movies of tours and more. The session will also briefly cover KML coding for advanced visualization and content creation, depending on the skills levels and interest of the attendees. Prerequisite: Google Earth basics
- Google Map Maker & Street View: Google may have some of the best map data and imagery in the industry, but it’s far from complete, and always a challenge to keep up to date, especially in the more remote and interesting corners of our planet. In this session, you will get an overview of the tools and processes available for updating and adding to the base maps, including map data (roads, places, etc.), satellite & aerial imagery, and ground-based imagery (Street View).
- Tour Builder: Bring your story to life in an interactive online experience that you can create without any programming skills required. Learn how to tell your story in a geospatial context in Google Tour Builder.
4:45pm - 5:00pm Closing remarks for Workshop Day #1
Tuesday, Nov. 11th
9:00am - 9:30am Breakfast
9:30am - 11:00am Monitoring & Analysis: Field Data Collection with Open Data Kit (ODK) - Open Data Kit is a set of tools that allows you to collect field data, such as text, photos/videos, and GPS location from an Android device where there's no internet connection and then publish that data to the web when you're back online. Once you've gathered your field data, we will upload the data to Google Maps Engine for mapping and visualization. We will also be covering some Android and mobile tips and tricks to help you select phones, manage them, and some useful geo apps and general purpose utilities.
11:00am - 11:45am Monitoring & Analysis: Introduction to Earth Engine - Earth Engine is Google's geo data analysis platform. This session introduces the concept of remote sensing, the Earth Engine platform and the tools available for browsing Earth Engine's data catalog and performing analyses on the data. This session is intended for first-time users of Earth Engine, or users who would like a review of all the basic skills.
11:45am - 12:45pm Lunch
12:45pm - 1:15pm Monitoring & Analysis: Introduction to Earth Engine (continued) - Earth Engine is Google's geo data analysis platform. This session introduces the concept of remote sensing, the Earth Engine platform and the tools available for browsing Earth Engine's data catalog and performing analyses on the data. This session is intended for first-time users of Earth Engine, or users who would like a review of all the basic skills.
1:15pm - 1:30pm Break
1:30pm - 2:45pm Monitoring & Analysis: Intermediate Google Earth Engine - The Earth Engine API (application programming interface) provides the ability to create your own algorithms to process raster and vector imagery. This session is intended for users with prior experience with Google Earth Engine.
